Madison's advanced traditional solo at Nationals
Clogging is a true American folk dance whose roots are buried deep in the heart of the Appalacian Mountains. The word "clog" is Gaelic for "time step". Clog dancing is therefore "time" dancing, with the heel being the time keeper. Cloggers wear soft leather shoes with jingle taps on them and the rhythms generated often sound like those of Irish Dance. Clogging is influenced by many of the European dnace forms, as well as Canadian step dancing. It is done to almost any kind of upbeat music with a 4/4 time signature. Country and traditional bluegrass music are the most popular, but cloggers today also dance to rock & roll, rap, hip hop, pop--anything with a fast beat. Emphasis is placed on body movement from the waist down and the smooth execution of a variety of steps. The intricate steps of traditional cloggers are all combinations of the eight basic toe heel movements of the dance.
